Gulf Shores Airport Wins Grant, Looks To Construction

GULF SHORES, Ala. Gulf Shores International Airport will receive a $59,000 grant for reimbursement for operating costs incurred during the pandemic, Gulf Coast Media reports. The funds are being provided by the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Rescue Grant for fiscal year 2022. Additionally, last year, the airport received two Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act grants: $23,000 to reimburse COVID-19 expenses and $166,677 for pavement maintenance. Now that construction on its $6.1-million air traffic control tower is complete, the airport is looking to build a passenger terminal at a cost of approximately $15 million. The airport authority is currently in the selection process for the firm that will design, build and operate it. The firms being considered have established relationships with airlines and would help market the airport. The passenger terminal is estimated to cost approximately $15 million. Once this building is built, Elite Airways is to begin scheduled flight service in and out of Gulf Shores.
