McNair Named Mobile’s Director Of External Affairs

Dr. Stephen McNair is the City of Mobile’s new director of external affairs. The position involves advising the mayor with an emphasis on legislative affairs in Montgomery and Washington, D.C., policy; building relationships with key government officials, lawmakers and stakeholders; and advocating for the interests of Mobile. McNair earned his PhD in history from the University of Edinburgh, his MA in historic preservation (policy and law) from Tulane University and his BA in history and political science from the University of Alabama. He served as president and senior consultant of McNair Historic Preservation, Inc. in Mobile for the past eight years. This national consultancy specializes in historic tax credit projects, the National Register of Historic Places, government relations, policy, advocacy, design, research, compliance and regulatory assistance. McNair previously served as director of historic sites for the Alabama Historical Commission, as a faculty lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, as a preservation specialist for the City of New Orleans and as director of the Citadel Success Institute.
