Mobile Aims To Replace Cruise Terminal Gangway

The City of Mobile is planning to purchase a $4.9-million gangway to connect its two-story cruise terminal to future Carnival Cruise Line ships. Cruises from Mobile ended on October 10, but Carnival said it will return on October 22, 2023, with the Spirit. The gangway would not be installed by then, but the existing gangway can be used while the new one is assembled. “This is our commitment to the cruising industry [signifying] that we are here to stay and look forward to other future opportunities that might present themselves,” said Joe Snowden, the city’s executive director of administrative services. The Mobile City Council is to vote on a contract with Spain-based Adelete Ports, which installed the terminal’s first gangway more than a dozen years ago for approximately $2.6 million. Snowden said the original gangway is a prototype, for which parts are scarce, and is not suitable “for a bigger class of ship that might come here.”
