Mobile Airport Changes Name

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Airport Authority (MAA) board voted on April 6 to change the name of the Downtown Mobile Airport to “Mobile International Airport” and displayed conceptual renderings of how a new terminal could look, AL.com reported. Now that the future $252-million five-gate terminal is 82% funded (Mobile County Earmarks $15 Million For Airport), the name change makes clear to the aviation industry that when the new facility opens in fall 2024, it will be ready for international business, MAA President Chris Curry said. The board approved the change with no opposition. However, true to Brookley Field’s history, the airport’s three-letter designation remains “BFM,” for “Brookley Field Mobile.” The early renderings of the layout show a general concept for a central terminal with two wings that could be added to provide more gates, up to approximately 12. The renderings also showed a covered parking garage close to the terminal.
