Mobile Airport Eligible For More Grants

The Mobile Downtown Airport has been accepted into the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration Military Airport Program, sources including FOX10 report. The administration selected Mobile’s airport; Kelly Field in San Antonio; and Salina Regional Airport in Salina, Kansas. These airports will be eligible for grants to add civilian aviation operations at former and current military airfields, add system capacity and help reduce congestion at existing airports. The program provides funding separate from the Airport Improvement Program to fund projects such as surface parking lots, fuel farms, hangars, utility systems, access roads, cargo buildings and other airfield-related infrastructure. “Adding civilian flights to these airports increases their role in fostering economic growth and creating jobs in their communities,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. The Mobile airport will participate in the program for five years, during which it will potentially receive funds for utility construction, airport drainage improvements, parking lot construction and an apron reconstruction project.
