Mobile County: Block Grants, Improvements Approved

The Mobile County Commission recently approved sub-recipient agreements up to $245,000 for annual funding through community-development block grants, Call News reported. They include $50,000 for Legal Services of Alabama to provide civil legal assistance through homeless prevention, $50,000 for the Semmes Woman’s Club to pay staff at the Semmes Senior Center, $35,000 for Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy to provide prescription drug assistance, $25,000 for the Child Advocacy Center to provide services to child abuse victims, $15,000 for the Penelope House Family Violence Center’s domestic violence victims advocacy project, $15,000 to the Family Counseling Center of Mobile to provide services for rape victims and provide homebuyer counseling, and $10,000 to the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission for the Grand Bay Senior Center to deliver meals.
Additionally, the source reported, the Mobile County Commission approved nearly $500,000 in renovation work for Franklin House at 355 North Ann Street in Mobile. The two-story residential building is to be converted to an office building and become Americans with Disabilities Act compliant. Architectural elements will be restored or replaced with historically sensitive reproductions, and flooring, electrical, plumbing and more will be overhauled. The commission has also approved a $321,500 contract with Goodwyn Mills Caywood to design improvements at Chickasabogue Park in Eight Mile. While still subject to legal review, the contract includes $73,500 for surveying and technological services and $248,000 in basic service fees, including an entrance and day-use area, a disc golf area and mountain bike trails.
