Mobile Downtown Airport Grant Approved

The Mobile Airport Authority recently received a $9.1-million grant to rehabilitate the primary runway serving the Mobile Downtown Airport and Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, Business Alabama reports. The U.S. Department of Transportation grant combines funds from the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2020 and Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. Built in 1929, the strip known as “Runway 14/32” was extended in 1955 and has been rehabilitated and upgraded several times since, most recently in 2005. The project, which would be synergistic with the preliminary work underway to move commercial service to Brookley over the next few years, is expected to start in March or April.
