Mobile Pursues Alternate Animal Shelter Plan

The City of Mobile has changed plans for replacing an animal shelter deemed too small and poorly located, FOX10 reports. The Mobile City Council recently voted to set aside $10 million from a pair of capital accounts for a new facility off Interstate 65. “What we’ve done is just set money aside at this point, so that when the plans come about, that money will be set aside just for the animal shelter, so that they can pursue the next administration,” said outgoing Mayor Sandy Stimpson. The administration originally planned to build a new shelter on land the city recently cleared off of Montlimar Drive, but Stimpson shelved the idea when the estimated cost came back at more than $24 million. Then, in April, the city council approved an $855,000 purchase of the former Trinity Broadcasting Network building at 1668 West I65 Service Road South. The mayor said the plan is to retrofit that building and tear down a smaller structure behind it. The city now is waiting for a revised architectural design, which officials said should be ready for the council to review on July 22.
