Saraland Wins $2.6-Million Brownfields Grant

The City of Saraland has been awarded a $2.6-million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The city received the grant through a cooperative agreement with USEPA’s Brownfields program, a nationwide initiative that helps communities assess, safely clean up and revitalize properties. The grant will be used for environmental remediation on a portion of the site of The Land Sports and Recreation Complex where a previously placed soil material was discovered belowground. The project will remove barriers that previously prevented development of that area of the property. The city said that, once work is complete, it will allow the city to expand recreational opportunities for residents while supporting growth and investment throughout the community. "The City of Saraland submitted an outstanding application, and we deeply appreciate the tremendous commitment of time and energy that went into its preparation," said Jerry Minor-Gordon-English, acting director of the USEPA Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization. “We fully expect that these brownfield projects will provide benefits to the environment and economy of local communities."
