Motion preservation surgery refers to surgical methods used in place of conventional spinal fusion that preserve the natural movement of the spine in the affected area. Hicks received a BS in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Georgia and earned a DM from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Alabama Birmingham and a Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Fellowship at Swedish Hospital.
