Original Oyster House Awards Scholarship

The Original Oyster House awarded its 21st Annual Chelsea Garvin Spirit Scholarship to Mary Katherine Crowell of Bayside Academy, who plans to attend Auburn University this fall. In 2006, the scholarship was founded in memory of Garvin, who was an employee, volunteer Fish River Fire Department Rescue Diver and artist. At age 19, she died in a boating accident while volunteering. Crowell, who painted a Banquet Room sunset from the Mobile Delta side, framed the artwork in an oyster shell, with the sun resembling a pearl. Her community service, which includes work with the Bayside Art Guild and her winning design of the Battleship Alabama Christmas card, reflects Garvin’s spirit and artistic talent.
