Amtrak Service To Get Platform Upgrades

Amtrak is expected to award a design contract soon for a permanent platform to replace the temporary aluminum platform in Mobile for its train route between Mobile and New Orleans, FOX10 News reports. Meanwhile, the city is working with Mott MacDonald to design a covering that will shelter passengers from the rain and sun, according to Stephen McNair, the city’s director of external and governmental affairs. “The city is going to continue having a tent or some kind of covering on site until the permanent covering is completed,” McNair said, adding that the city will seek grant funding to pay for the project. Construction of the covering and platform is planned to start this summer and be completed by the end of 2026. The aluminum will be replaced with a concrete structure that is longer, more durable and able to accommodate more train cars. That should also allow people to embark and debark the train faster.
