APM Terminals To Expand Capacity

MOBILE, Ala. — APM Terminals and the Alabama Port Authority have signed an agreement to add 32 acres to the current 134-acre container terminal yard at the Port of Mobile to keep pace with future demand. The expansion will bring the facility’s annual throughput capacity to 1 million 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) and allow the terminal to handle cargo containers from larger (14,000-TEU) ships. Additionally, the expansion includes two new “super post-panamax” ship-to-shore cranes. APM said its expansion (the third in six years) will add approximately 80 new jobs with an average annual salary of $143,000. The $104-million project is to begin later this year, with the first 19 acres to be completed in 2024 and the remaining 13 acres by early 2025.
