Former Enterprise To Be Dismantled In Mobile

The U.S. Navy vessel known as CVN-65, formerly the USS Enterprise, is to be dismantled in Mobile, NBC15 reports. NorthStar Maritime Dismantlement Services of Vernon, Vermont, has been awarded a $546.7-million contract to dismantle the vessel, which was the first nuclear aircraft carrier. CVN-65 is to be dismantled in its entirety in Mobile, with all resulting materials to be properly recycled or disposed of, according to the contract, which The Aviationist says is the first for a commercial company to dismantle a nuclear aircraft carrier. Waste Control Specialists of Andrews, Texas, will handle disposal of low-level radioactive and mixed hazardous waste, while all other materials will be recycled or safely discarded in compliance with relevant environmental regulations. The work is expected to be completed in November 2029.
