SSAB Announces $12-Million Upgrade

SSAB has announced a $12-million upgrade project at its steel mill in Axis. The Stockholm-based company said the investment will enable SSAB Alabama to extend its existing furnace and upgrade shot blasting equipment to increase its quenching and tempering (QT) capacity by 30,000 metric tons—an increase of approximately 10%. “Growing SSAB here in Alabama is a priority for our company. SSAB Special Steels’ strategic objective is to increase QT capacity, and Mobile plays a significant role in achieving this,” said Andy Bramstedt, general manager of SSAB Alabama. Operations for the upgrade are expected to begin by fourth quarter 2025.
