City Of Mobile Breaks Ground On Heroes Plaza

The City of Mobile broke ground this week on Heroes Plaza, a new attraction intended to honor its sports icons. It will feature 9-ft-tall bronze statues of Mobile’s Hall of Fame baseball players Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige, Billy Williams, Ozzie Smith and Willie Lee McCovey, as well as National Football League Hall of Famer Robert Brazile, Jr. Funded through the downtown tax increment financing district, the $10-million investment will also include several enhancements to the area between the Mobile Convention Center and Cooper Riverside Park, including a new intersection, a roundabout and a revised drop-off area for vehicles. Additional Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps will be added, along with a new fountain, pedestals and signage for the statues. The project will also include improvements to the marquee and upgrades to the landscaping, lighting, security, drainage and sidewalks in the area.
