Mobile Celebrating USS Mobile Today

Mobile is holding a Mardi Gras-style parade at 6:30 p.m. with fireworks at 9:30 p.m. tonight to celebrate the commissioning of the USS Mobile, Business Alabama was among outlets to report. The event is to include floats from most of the city’s mystic societies and marching bands. Built on the Mobile waterfront at Austal USA, the littoral combat ship is designed to be a “highly maneuverable, lethal and adaptable ship designed to support focused mine countermeasures, anti-submarine and surface warfare missions,” the U.S. Navy said. Its home port will be San Diego. While there will be an official commissioning ceremony on the morning of May 22, this will not be open to the public due to COVID-19 concerns.
