Mobile Cuts Ribbon On Hall Of Fame Walk

The City of Mobile honored some of its greatest sports legends during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Hall of Fame Walk on June 24. In front of the Mobile Convention Center on the downtown waterfront, the Hall of Fame Walk is a permanent installation honoring Major League Baseball Hall of Fame inductees Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige, Billy Williams, Ozzie Smith and Willie McCovey, as well as National Football League Hall of Fame inductee Robert Brazile. Six 9-ft-tall statues of each of these native Mobilians now line the plaza in front of the Convention Center. They are the centerpiece of recently completed renovations that also added improved landscaping and hardscaping, an eye-catching water feature and built-in seating for visitors. In addition to celebrating Mobile’s rich sports legacy, the Hall of Fame Walk will serve as a tourism anchor along the city’s downtown waterfront. With several nearby developments already underway, the installation enhances the downtown experience while also highlighting the impact athletes from Mobile have made and continue to make in multiple professional sports leagues. The vision for the Hall of Fame Walk was first conceived by a Mobile native who is a baseball legend in his own right. Miracle Met and World Series Champion Cleon Jones first approached the city with a concept to honor an “All Mobile” team fielded by its professional baseball players. Over time, that concept was refined and expanded into today’s Hall of Fame Walk.
