USA Coach Hired By Alabama

University of South Alabama (USA) head football coach Kane Wommack resigned on January 16 and will be the University of Alabama’s new defensive coordinator for new head football coach Kalen DeBoer, the Associated Press reports. DeBoer, who was hired away from the University of Washington last week to replace Nick Saban, and Wommack worked together as assistants at Indiana University Bloomington in 2019 under Tom Allen. DeBoer was offensive coordinator, and Wommack defensive coordinator. Wommack has been head coach at USA for three seasons, going 22-16 overall and 13-11 in the Sun Belt. He led the Jaguars to the team’s first bowl win last season with a 59-10 victory over Eastern Michigan University in the Lending Tree Bowl. USA’s defense ranked 22nd in the country in yards per play allowed (5.01) in 2023, a tie with Alabama.
