Curbside Recycling To Expand In Baldwin County

All Baldwin County residents could be eligible for curbside recycling after the county’s Solid Waste Authority completes construction of a 50,000-ft2 materials recovery facility (MRF) adjacent to Magnolia Landfill in Summerdale, AL.com reports. Scheduled to be completed later this year, the facility will process recycled materials from around the county. The county is expected to begin rolling out curbside recycling in phases in 2025. The county hopes to partner with the four cities in the county that already provide curbside recycling to their residents. For cities and towns that do not already provide recycling, the MRF gives them an opportunity to implement curbside recycling when it might be too expensive otherwise. When completed, the MRF will be able to process nearly 40,000 tons annually. In addition, the facility will include a 7,000-ft2 educational center on garbage and recycling. The total cost of the MRF and accompanying facilities is approximately $25 million, some of which is funded through municipal bonds and some of which is funded by grants. Baldwin County residents interested in curbside recycling will have to opt in and pay to receive it.
