Prichard Water, Sewer Becoming Independent

The Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Prichard has secured the funds and resources needed to establish itself as a fully independent and self-sustaining utility, it announced this week. The transition process has already begun, and the board expects changes to be evident immediately. It added, “This means upgrades to the quality of service and a more focused control of rates, delivery and repair.” Major impacts are to be seen as early as mid-year 2021 with the installation of new automatic and advanced water meters, followed by a relocation of outfall pipelines, construction of new drinking water supply wells and upgrades to treatment facilities. Additionally, generators will be added to all 29 sewer lift stations, and a two-year improvement plan is to bring changes that “will further strengthen Prichard, Chickasaw and all the surrounding communities and open these areas for population growth and community upgrades,” according to the statement. Currently, water is purchased from the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System. Questions about the upcoming changes may be directed to email.
