Malone Wins AARP Purpose Prize
Local businesswoman Janice Malone is among the top five AARP Purpose Prize winners. Building on her more than 25 years of experience as a Black entrepreneur, Malone founded Vivian’s Door, an economic justice nonprofit that helps Black businesses grow, scale and reinvest in their communities. It advances the interests and needs of underserved minority-owned businesses and farmers in South and Central Alabama through an incubator and accelerator model. The award honors individuals who use their knowledge and life experiences to make a difference. Malone and four other winners will receive $50,000 grants for their organizations. Vivian’s Door said its prize money will help it cultivate valuable corporate relationships; build stronger community connections; acquire knowledge; and source business experts, mentors and investors. Additionally, public voting on the Purpose Prize award winners is open through October 18. In this second portion of the awards program, the AARP Inspire Award, the winner will receive an additional $10,000 for their organization.
