Americans And The Holocaust Coming To Mobile

Americans and the Holocaust, a traveling exhibition from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, will open at Mobile’s Ben May Main Library on May 15 and be on display until June 23. The exhibit examines Americans’ responses to Nazism, war and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s and asks, “What did Americans know, and what more could have been done?” The exhibition also presents stories of individual Americans, some of whom dared to rescue Jews from Europe. The library is one of 50 in the U.S. selected to host Americans and the Holocaust. Based on extensive new research, the exhibit addresses important themes in American history, exploring factors including the Great Depression, isolationism, xenophobia, racism and antisemitism that influenced American decisions as they responded to Nazism. “We’re glad to partner with the Gulf Coast Holocaust Center to offer guided tours for groups and families,” said Library Director Margie Calhoun. “Our history defines our present and future, and this is a can’t miss opportunity for Mobile to view the exhibit and engage in our lineup of programming.”
