Evonik To Build New Plant In Theodore

THEODORE, Ala. — Essen, Germany-based chemical manufacturer Evonik recently announced it will construct a methyl mercaptan plant at a cost of more than $169 million at its site in Theodore. Also known as “MetAMINO (DL-methionine),” the chemical is currently sourced by Evonik from third parties. “The new methyl mercaptan plant in Mobile is another important step in the consistent implementation of our global methionine asset strategy,” explained Johann-Caspar Gammelin, head of Evonik’s nutrition & care division. Evonik also called the investment “a building block of the division’s sustainability strategy: it will reduce the carbon footprint of DL- methionine from Mobile by approximately 7%, saving more than 25,000 mT of CO2 equivalents each year. The plant is scheduled to come on line in the second half of 2024.
