Mobile Downtown Airport Runway Under Construction

Work kicked off on the Mobile Airport Authority’s project to rehabilitate the primary runway, Runway 14/32, serving the Mobile Downtown Airport and Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley this week, Business Alabama reports. Funded with a $9.1-million grant received from the U.S. Department of Transportation in February (Mobile Downtown Airport Grant Approved), the renovation is to include resurfacing 8,600 ft of runway, installing new LED lighting, improving drainage and enhancing navigational approach. “Overall, this project will help the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley continue to be an important economic driver by improving its existing infrastructure for our tenants and the Mobile Downtown Airport,” said Chris Curry, Mobile Airport Authority president. “It’s best to complete this project now before we relocate commercial air passenger service, so it won’t impact those operations.” Flights to the complex will use the north/south Runway 18/36 until Runway 14/32’s planned reopening this fall.
