The RAIN Group Receives 214 Acres From Mobile
The Mobile City Council recently approved a $1 transfer of 214 acres of wooded property in northern Mobile along Shelton Beach Road to The RAIN Group of Mobile, AL.com reported. The nonprofit, founded in 2015, plans to transform the property into an active community to support workforce development and provide a host of resources, including housing, for homeless individuals. City officials said the city-owned property has long sat unused and that the sale to The RAIN Group represented a “no-lose” situation for taxpayers. The nonprofit’s idea for the property includes a three-phase multiyear buildout that includes the construction of utility infrastructure and a storm shelter, followed by the completion of a workforce development center and 160 apartment units. The goal is to create a campus with an annual capacity for 2,000. The RAIN Group hopes its environmental assessments and land excavation can be completed within the next year, with construction of a temporary shelter and resource center taking place within the next six months.
