Langan Lake Dredging To Begin This Month

The dredging of Langan Lake, the third phase of the Three Mile Creek Watershed Restoration Project, is kicking off this month in Mobile. It will remove more than 225,000 cubic yards of sediment from the lakebed, improving overall water quality; removing invasive species; and opening the lake to expanded recreational uses, such as kayaking and canoeing. The work will also include drainage improvements, which will utilize dredge spoil for construction. The current concrete drainage channel on the northeast side of the park will be converted into a naturalized stream, featuring stones and native plant material. Local small business Hughes Cos. Inc. will perform the dredging for $15.1 million, which the City of Mobile says is the largest contract it has ever awarded to a local small business. Some funding came from the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council under the RESTORE Act, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and the city.
