Mobile County Leads New Jobs In State

Thirty percent of all new jobs announced across the state last year went to Mobile County, according to the New & Expanding Industry Announcements report recently released by the Alabama Department of Commerce, AL.com reports. The state’s economic development successes last year included announcements of more than 8,500 new jobs, up slightly from the previous year. Mobile County was by far the biggest winner in 2024, with the promise of 2,553 new jobs. Shipyard jobs are a key driver of that growth, along with chemical companies and the logistics industry tied to the container terminal at the Port of Mobile. Most of the new jobs came from Austal USA expansions adding nearly 2,200 jobs combined. Mobile County also claimed 1,200 new jobs in the first quarter of this year. In addition to shipyard jobs, this number is composed of ArcelorMittal’s $1.2-billion steel mill plans (1,300 jobs).
